My Day Volunteering at Greenwood Sanctuary

Author: Danielle Prince

When I signed up to volunteer at Greenwood Sanctuary, I knew I’d be in for a day of meaningful work and plenty of time with animals. But what I didn’t expect was how much I’d learn—and how much fun I’d have along the way!

Morning Adventures: Driving the Tractor

The day began with something I never thought I’d do: driving a tractor. With a quick lesson and some encouragement from the team, I was off, hauling supplies across the sanctuary’s beautiful 30-acre land. It was a surprisingly satisfying way to start the day and gave me a chance to take in the rolling fields and ancient woodlands the animals call home.

Feeding Time for the Pigs

Next up was preparing food for the pigs, and let me tell you, they have a very specific (and genius!) meal plan. The pigs follow a “2:2:2 rule”—two handfuls each of greens, vegetables, and fruits. Dark leafy greens are a must, as they’re packed with nutrients, not just for pigs but for humans too!

Chopping and mixing their meals was strangely therapeutic, and watching the pigs devour their balanced buffet with snorts of approval was even better. It’s clear how much thought and care goes into their diets, ensuring they’re happy and healthy.

Cleaning Out the Goats’ Stable

After that, it was time to tackle the goats’ stable. Armed with a shovel and a wheelbarrow, I helped clean out their living space, making it fresh and cozy for them to relax in. Goats are such characters—curious and mischievous, they didn’t hesitate to inspect my work as I went.

Exploring the Sanctuary

With my tasks done, I took some time to wander around Greenwood’s expansive land. The sanctuary is a haven for its residents, and you can feel the peace and safety in every corner. From the lush fields to the shaded woodland, it’s the perfect environment for the animals to thrive.

A Cheeky Send-Off from the Chickens

As I was leaving, I got a hilarious surprise: the chickens decided to escort me to my car — by chasing me! They were clucking and pecking at me, I’d like to think, they were trying to say, “Don’t go!” It was a brilliant send off from a great day full of learning and connection with the animals.

Why Volunteering Matters

Volunteering at Greenwood Sanctuary was an unforgettable experience. Not only did I get to help care for the animals and learn about their needs, but I also left feeling inspired by the dedication of the team and the incredible bond they’ve created with the residents.

If you’re looking for a way to give back, connect with nature, and make a real difference in the lives of animals, I can’t recommend volunteering at Greenwood enough. Just watch out for those cheeky chickens on your way out!
