Meet the Chickens

Chicken

Roger was found wandering the streets of Birmingham as a young cockerel.

He was probably kicked out of home when they realised he was a boy and would be crowing very soon.

He was handed in to Abi and she called me and I went and collected him. He came to the sanctuary on the 19th October 2022 and was probably around 8 weeks old

Although he is tiny, you can hear his crow right across the sanctuary

Jessie came to the sanctuary from a friend who wanted to give Roger a friend to live with. She was around 8 weeks old when she came to the sanctuary on 25th May 2024.

She bonded with Roger immediately and they are inseparable. She is free from the egg industry where she would have been only valued by the number of eggs she laid and when she stopped laying she would have been slaughtered.

Covboy came to the sanctuary with four other male chicks on the 2nd May 2024.

I collected them from a primary school in Birmingham after five male chicks were unwanted following a school hatching programme.

All the unwanted chicks are given back to the company and killed.

Hatching eggs in school is unethical and exploits the chicks purely for children to watch an egg hatch, they don’t get to see the reality for the unwanted and homeless chicks

Petal came to the sanctuary after losing her lifetime mate and she could no longer stay at her humans home. She came to us on the 13th October 2024.

She is our oldest resident at 9 years old, she lives with Roger and Jessie. She struggled at first with the change as she had lost her companion and her home, she was scared and lonely but with lots of patience she has now settled in and is becoming more confident.
