Meet the Turkeys

Eric

Eric arrived with Ernie on the 2nd August 2024. He had been rescued by Coppershell Animal Rescue from a farm. He came to Greenwood as he was looking for a permanent home. He settled in quickly and free roams around the sanctuary, saying hello to all the other animals as he walks around.

He goes everywhere with Ernie, but Eric is definitely the top turkey and rules the roost. He is the one on the left.

Turkeys are the most curious and fun birds and always run over to see you when we have visitors.

Ernie arrived with Eric on the 2nd August 2024. He had been rescued by Coppershell Animal Rescue from a farm. He came to Greenwood as he was looking for a permanent home.

He is smaller than Eric and follows him everywhere, the walk around and look so cool while they look over their grounds.

He is so sweet and gentle and makes the most amazing sounds. You must meet a turkey in real life and you will never want them on anyone’s plate ever again

Nina

Nina came to the sanctuary on the 31st July 2024 as a turkey chick, around 6 weeks old.

She came with 4 other chicks and they would have been Christmas dinner this year if they hadn’t have been rescued.

They are growing up quickly, other turkeys destined for thanksgiving and Christmas are gassed at around 4 months old, just babies.

Nina stands out as she is the only brown turkey in the group.

Janice came to the sanctuary with four other turkey chicks after being rescued from the meat industry.

The turkey girls are so sweet and curious, they stay as a group and follow us everywhere. If we are washing food bowls they always come and help and stand on the bowls trying to catch the spray of water.

You always know when Janice is there as she has a solid white stripe across her tail feathers.

Janice
Jimi

Jimi is the only boy in the group of 5 turkey chicks that came to the sanctuary on the 31st January 2024.

He stays with the four girls the entire time and has grown quickly and shows off his tail feathers for most of the day as he walks around. He plumps up his chest as he goes about his business and sings to the girls to get their attention.

Turkeys living on farms are fed a turkey finisher food for their last two to three weeks of life, this fattens them so quickly they can’t even carry teir own weight.

Jimi’s snood is growing each week and girl turkeys are very impressed by the size of the boys snood.

Fergie is one of the five chicks that came to Greenwood on the 31st July 2024.

She is recognised by her stripe on her tail feathers that looks like white dashes going across the feathers.

The chicks grew quickly and although they are large birds, they can fly on to high posts and fences. Sometimes I have to climb up and carry them down again as they are brave to get up there but not so brave to get down

Fergie
Sia

Sia is one of the turkey chicks that came to Greenwood on the 31st July 2024.

Sia only has one splash of white on her tail and is one of the most curious of all the turkeys.

She flies into Kevin the pigs home and tries to share his meal when he gets his lunch. He doesn’t seem to mind sharing his lunch with her.

She talks all day, making her musical sounds to let all the other turleys know what she wants to do. When she finds herself on an adventure and separated from the others, she calls to them to come and find her.
